I think that part of the problem is that our society has long conflated love and need—consider the many variations in movies, TV, song, and writing on "I love you. I need you. I've got to have you." This conveys the notion that loving someone also means needing them in order to feel complete.

The flip side is that helping someone in need becomes a way of demonstrating love—and all the more if the person providing the help has difficulty expressing love in words. (I've been guilty of this myself.)

Now, I don't know how your mom is about expressing her feelings, but maybe what she was trying to say (without realizing it, of course, because this is a subconscious process) was that she wants more opportunities to show you that she loves you.

That's my guess, anyway…

I think that acceptance is the biggest hurtle. We spend our whole life trying to be other people and if we can just learn to be ourselves (like you) we will be one step closer to being authentic. I LOVE how you can paint words.

Of course. Easier said than done but a worthwhile pursuit, especially for the girl inside of me who is always looking for an escape hatch or exit sign.

Absolutely it’s hard to admit when we need something or someone. The ideal of self-sufficiency (a grand fallacy if ever there was one) is drummed into Americans as soon as we’re capable of conscious thought. As a result, admitting we need anything is often viewed as weakness by others, and failure by ourselves…
